Sod prices by grass
What farms and garden centers post, per square foot, before delivery. The middle 80% of prices.
Bahia and centipede: too few farms post a price, so we show none. Farm-gate pallets run lowest. Single rolls and slabs at garden centers cost the most. Southern California and Utah prices ran high.
A pallet price counts only when the farm says how many square feet the pallet holds. Delivery: $56 to $273 a trip, from 8 sellers. Some charge by the mile or add a pallet deposit.
How the math works
- Area. Length times width. For a circle, half the width times itself, times 3.1416. Extra areas are added on. One square meter is 10.76 sq ft.
- Extra for cuts. Area times 1 plus the extra. MSU Extension says buy about 5% more. Farms say 5 to 10%. Use more for a yard with curves and trees.
- Pallets. Square feet to buy, divided by the pallet size, rounded up.
- Slabs or rolls. A 16 × 24 in slab is 2.67 sq ft. A 2 × 5 ft roll is 10 sq ft. Square feet divided by that, rounded up. Farms often load about 160 slabs on a 450 sq ft pallet.
- Weight. MSU says a 450 sq ft pallet may weigh a ton. Farms post up to 3,000 lb. We show about 1 to 1.5 tons a pallet.
- Price. The middle 80% of the prices farms post a sq ft, times the square feet you buy. Delivery is extra.
Questions
How much sod is on a pallet?
Most pallets hold 400 to 500 sq ft. MSU Extension says 450 to 500 is typical. Farms with rolls often load 500 to 700 sq ft. Always ask your farm.
What does sod cost per square foot?
About $0.43 to $1.42 a sq ft, before delivery. Half the prices we found were under $0.65. Zoysia and St. Augustine cost a bit more.
How much is a pallet of sod?
A 450 to 500 sq ft pallet of warm-season grass is posted at about $150 to $495. Northern pallets of 500 to 700 sq ft are about $290 to $436. Delivery adds $56 to $273.
How many slabs or rolls are on a pallet?
About 160 slabs of 16 × 24 in on a 450 sq ft pallet. A 500 sq ft pallet of 2 × 5 ft rolls has 50 rolls.
How much extra sod should I buy?
About 5% more than your lawn, says MSU Extension. Buy up to 10% more if your yard has curves, beds and trees.
How heavy is a pallet of sod?
About a ton or more. Farms post 2,500 to 3,000 lb. That is why most people have it delivered.
