How deep to spread pine straw

Clemson says a 2 to 3 inch layer. UGA says 2 to 4 inches. UGA says more than 6 inches does no more good.

Fresh straw is fluffy. It settles down. UGA says 4 to 5 inches of fresh straw settles to about 2 inches.

Pine needles hook together. Clemson says they stay in place better than most mulch, even on a slope.

Old straw still there? Add new straw on top. Some sellers say a bale goes further over old straw.

How the math works

  1. Area. Length times width. For a circle, half the width times itself, times 3.1416. One meter is 3.28084 feet.
  2. One bale. We say a square bale covers 30 to 50 sq ft at 3 in deep, 40 typical. This is our estimate from sellers' pages.
  3. Depth. Twice as deep takes twice as many bales.
  4. Bales. Area, times your depth, divided by 3 in, divided by what a bale covers. Rounded up.
  5. Round bales. One seller says a round bale is about 3 square bales.
  6. Price. What sellers post for a square bale of longleaf straw, before delivery: $5.00 to $8.79. We leave out the cheapest and dearest tenth. Most sellers we found are in the Southeast.
