Hi! I need about 2.9 tons (2.47 cubic yards) of #57 stone, delivered. What would it cost, with delivery?
Kinds of crushed stone
| Stone | Tons a cubic yard | Price a ton | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| #57 stoneNRCS puts it on top of a stone drive | 1.01 to 1.3 | $43 to $97 | |
| #8 stoneSmaller than #57 | 1.01 to 1.3 | Too few yards | |
| #3 stoneBigger than #57 | 1.01 to 1.3 | Too few yards | |
| Crusher runPacks hard. A base for drives, patios and sheds | 1.4 to 1.6 | $21 to $45 |
Clean stone like #57 has gaps between the stones. Crusher run has stone dust in it. The dust fills the gaps, so it packs hard.
Weights: Alabama DOT loose weights for crushed limestone. Crusher run: our estimate. Uses: USDA NRCS Ohio and a stone yard.
Tons or cubic yards?
Yards sell stone by the ton or by the cubic yard. A cubic yard of clean crushed stone weighs about 1.01 to 1.3 tons. So a ton is a bit less than a yard.
Ask the yard how they sell it. Then order the number on the left or the right of the answer.
How the math works
- Area. Length times width. For a circle, half the width times itself, times 3.1416. One meter is 3.28084 feet.
- Volume. Area in sq ft times the depth in inches, divided by 12, gives cubic feet. Divided by 27 gives cubic yards.
- Packing. Caterpillar says loose gravel packs to 0.89 of its size. So packed stone needs 1 ÷ 0.89 as much.
- Weight. Cubic yards times the tons a yard for your stone, from the table.
- Price. What yards post a ton, for typical tons. We leave out the cheapest and dearest tenth. Delivery is extra: about $40 to $140.
