Hi! For a new gravel driveway I need about 22.5 tons of crusher run, delivered. What would it cost, with delivery?

How thick to make a gravel driveway

Road guides give a few ways. All are for packed stone.

  • 6 in of crusher run. Wisconsin DOT's drawing for a private drive.
  • 8 in of crusher run. USDA NRCS in Ohio, for cars and trucks.
  • 6 in of big stone, then 2 in of #57 on top. Also NRCS Ohio. Fill the gaps with fine stone so the top is smooth.
  • Penn State road mix. Spread 8 in and pack it to 6 in. Or spread 6 in and pack to 4½ in.

Stone shrinks when you pack it. We add 12% to what you order, from Caterpillar's figure for gravel.

Wisconsin DOT 9A14 (2025), USDA NRCS Ohio 560 (2022), Penn State Center for Dirt and Gravel Roads (2025), Caterpillar.

Crown, fabric and packing

Crown. Make the middle higher than the edges, so water runs off. Penn State says ½ to ¾ in for each foot from the edge. A 12 ft drive is 3 to 4½ in higher in the middle.

Fabric. On soft ground, like clay or wet soil, NRCS says to lay road fabric under the stone.

Packing. Penn State packs its road mix with a 10 ton roller. Michigan's guide says to lay stone in layers of 3 to 6 in, and pack each one.

Penn State, USDA NRCS Ohio, Michigan EGLE (2012).

How the math works

  1. Area. Length times width. One meter is 3.28084 feet.
  2. Each layer. Area times the packed depth, in cubic yards. Times 1 ÷ 0.89 for packing.
  3. Weight. Crusher run: 1.4 to 1.6 tons a cubic yard (our estimate). Clean stone, like #57: 1.01 to 1.3, from Alabama DOT.
  4. Penn State road mix. Penn State's own rule: width times length times 0.04 tons.
  5. Price. What yards post a ton: crusher run $21 to $45, #57 $43 to $97. We found too few prices for big base stone and road mix. Delivery is extra, about $40 to $140 a truck.
